_________________________________________________________________________________________________________APRIL APRIL - MAY - JUNE 2009Greetings from the Far North........and from middle Earth!Yes....... Monika took over the wee gallery on Kerikeri Road and turned it into a artistic circus, and Jo flew away to live in Middle Earth.......perhaps more commonly known as Waiheke Island. She paints and laughs and sings in a tiny dwelling in Paradise. (She is still muttering to her herself, but they dont seem to mind over there!!!) We thought we'd inlcude 3 months in this newsletter as the Pied Pipress has been hideously BIZZY, and is WAYYYYY behind schedule...............but then what's new?? ________________________________________________________________________________________ HOT GINGER GALLERY..... The Pied Pipress opened "HOT GINGER Gallery in early April 2009. And what an opening!!! It was a great-turn-out with lots of food and .....errrr......... a tiny bit of alcohol.....and a whole lot of laughs. (I think two people were being very norty in a photo shoot......... with a pram but we have not yet identified the perpertrators!) Thanks so so much to the very patient angels who helped cleaning, painting, revamping, gardening, and attending to guests on the night........... Ivan, Vibeke, Agil and hubby John. You are amazing!! Big thanks to all who came and especially those who travelled miles to get there!! There were great sales on the night and one of the top sellers was a budding 'weird doll/ cushion' maker, Jazz Welch. Yes she is the Pied pipress' daughter and because of her gene pool had no chance really of making anything normal! Her 'monsta-cushies' were a hit and still are! She sold most in the first week, has had commissions and was also offered a private exhibition by two local cafe entrepreneurs. Everything she makes is sold very quickly in the gallery, so her mother is quite pleased that Jazz will be able to sustain her in her old age!! Go Jazz.......you rock!! And to all the artists involved.....from all over NZ, and were willing to take a chance with Hot Ginger, the Pied Pipress thanks you very very much! Without you, there would be no quirky odd gallery in Kerikeri. You are all stars! IF you would like to see ALL the FANTASTIC works in the gallery please go to the HOT ginger BLOGSPOT! Sign up....be a follower! Lots of great paintings and quirky gifts available for sale. Be sure to call in and visit the Pied Pipress at: Hot Ginger Gallery 389 Kerikeri Road Kerikeri .......and wonderful to meet all of you who have dropped by! _______________________________________________________________________________________ Landing in Waiheke Island....... Joanna packed her wordly possessions into a large van and skipped off merrily to Middle Earth...........whereby she made herself acquainted with the good folk of Waiheke. She has enjoyed a fair share of visitors and has thus far managed to squeeze them all in .....and play a wee game of 'Twister' here and there! It's a small but homely home and studio with a great view of the ocean!!You are all welcome to stay! Bring your family and your family's family! ![]() Like a shipwrecked sailor, Jo set to....... discovering and exploring her newfound environment. After a few weeks of......... socializing with her fellow island natives, Jo eventually settled down to what she does so well, and completed a lovely little piece for a local Kerikeri business owner. I believe that the piece will be used in the future as advertising for Cocoon Clothing Boutique. Here is: Fly My Pretty ![]() Jo sends out a BIG wave to all her friends and art students back in Kerikeri. She is very happy in her new 'digs' and new adventures....but she does miss you all! Her studio is now open for business now so just flick Jo an email or phone (details above) to let her know that you might be coming. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Monika has had a very bizzy time of it, working the gallery, looking after the family, singing and dancing the mamooshka, recovering from two dreaded lergies...and a SPIDER BITE! Oh and of course drinking loads of coffee with her art buddies and her special RAE! (By the way, Rae and I, now know EVERYTHING about native birds and trees! Hmmmmm) Yes it's mayhem really.........BUT she has still found time to paint. Quite a bit actually! ![]() The gallery has done very well so far, with consistent sales and regular clients. Hot Ginger has made a wee name for itself already, here in Northland as well as in the NORTH ISLAND......which is fantastic. Thanks so much to all who have come by and been so positive......even if you did have muddy feet! There is still plenty of marketing to do but we'll get there as we can. Check out Monika's new, old and sold works here at ARTDZINER . Monika entered the Matariki awards held annually in Paihia with a cheeky little pink piece that attracted quite a bit of attention. In fact several women hurtled on over to Kerikeri to see the 'nutbar' who created it. Consequently, several 'nutbars' in the making, signed up for............. ______________________________________________________________________________________ 'ART -Quirk ' classes (By Monika Welch) Starting: Friday the 24th July (and every Friday) Time: 9.30 -11.30am Where: The Scrapbooking Shed, 175 Pungaere Rd, Kerikeri Cost: $15 per person ...per class (Some materials can be purchased from The Scrapbooking Shed.) Exciting huh!! WATCH THIS SPACE! ______________________________________________________________________________________ In memory of........................ NORMAN ALEXANDER MCLEOD ![]() ON April the 22nd of this year, my beautiful, warm, gregarious and fabulous father passed away suddenly. He had been sick off and on for some years and this was indeed a blessing for him and our family that the end of his life was quick and painfree. For all us 7 children, our respective others, mum, many many grandies and great grandies, dad installed an internal cheeriness and a belief in all that is good and great about our world. He was a very prayerful man with great faith and he touched many, many people ....which was evident at his funeral and the days that have passed since. He was a GREAT man ....pure and simple, and we miss him. For me personally he taught me to be charitable....in spirit and in words. To try and see the best in everyone. He also gave me a great love for words. Together we would sit in the morning, hot drinks and NZ herald in hand and discover the world of incredible words and meanings! He told me often and showed me more, that he was proud of me.....and my creative spirit. I know for sure that the world is a different place without him in it. How wonderful to have lived a life, loving so many and being loved by SO many, in return. To all of you who wrote, txted, emailed, rang and wrote cards, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. When one HAS to endure pain such as the loss of someone so GREAT, it lessens quicker with the comfort given by others. Our family has not been in Kerikeri long....only two years, but I felt surrounded and encased in love and thoughtful words and deeds. Thankyou thankyou. IT doesn't cost much to offer a small word or touch to let people know that you at the very least......care! For those who didnt know him....you missed out!!! He was one in a laughing million! Dad.......Thanks for the BIG chats, warm daddy-hugs and.......... laughs. And thankyou for picking me!! I love you. Monika X _____________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks everybody for supporting the arts. You have purchased and commissioned works for the last 3 months ....obviously in an effort to defy the recession! GOOD ON YOU! We are very grateful....and the recession will slowly slip away. Just watch! Finally someone wrote a poem about Mrs Hot ginger the other day. He wishes to remain anonymous. Here it is........... LOOKING ON
Ginger paints whether
heads or cloud
humming a memory
thinking aloud (allowed?)
Dust off me bum
along with the day
not worry nor whimsy
shall stand in the way
Rainbows to bottle
muses for capture
perchance upon door
Essence of Rapture
To that end
A Tidal Swell
colors crash
with oily smell
Wave after Wave...Stroke upon Stroke...relentless inspiration. Is that cool or what?? So on that note, Joanna and Monika bid you farewell. Be good, be well and if you cant......get your paints out! Jo and Monika ______________________________________________________________________________________ FEBRUARY 2009 - MARCH 2009 We're back again! And.................. we're on time! The 1st of April.....not late, never early.....just on time! Wonders never cease. Reason.........well Jo has nearly left the area and Monika is taking over the gallery. So we have much to say and no dilly-dallying about it!Thanks for joining us again to hear our 'no-recession news'. The only broadcast of it's kind in NZ. Bringing you hope and salvation by encouraging one and all....................... to purchase art!_________________________________________________________________________________________________________News Bulletin :" Artists defy Recession by selling more art than ever!"Last month Monika sold a fabaliss piece to a couple in Auckland and then got a few great wee commissions. She giggled a lot and did some cartwheels....Then .............we all, (Jo, Monika and several other Joanna Upperton friends, family and fans) ventured down to Jo's stunning exhibition at Warwick Henderson gallery inAuckland. It was a sight to behold! And there was a surprise for Jo!She walked into her own exhibition to find that FOUR paintings had sold already!!! Good heavens! (More cart-wheeling!)Two days later , Jo sold a fifth and we all returned to Kerikeri with big grins, more cartwheels, and oh ..........one of us had a headache.......but we won't say who that was! There are two paintings that have not sold yet, so remember...............buy art..........no recession! Well , it works for us!Here is Pourerere Palace:![]() The long-awaited invite.......................... Come one and all to celebrate the opening of Hot Ginger gallery. Because this project has been designed on a wing and a prayer, it will be a BYO bottle event. I know, I know, but there will be some treaties for you to sample. This is an evening of festive frivolity.....a chance to meet new arty folk and catch up with those you know. The gallery is based on a quirky and electic flavour.......unpredictable and fun.......hey and what better way to kick off the Easter weekend!!! There are NZ -made arty products, jewellery, art clothes and of course paintings. All sorts for every budget! ![]() OH dear! A Huge apology to Lisa Donovan for excluding her from the artist list on the invite. Very norty indeed of the Pied Press but I believe her head is a bit fuddled at present. Lisa will definitely be exhibiting on the day! In fact she will be part-time resident of Hot Ginger. Hooray hooray!!! Jo will be leaving her wee gallery of two years this week, and heading down to play with ALL the other artists and creative geniuses on Waiheke Island. It's going to be a HUGE but very groovy experience for our fearless art explorer and so we sent out our 'MOJO' reporter to get some comments from the artiste herself. This is what she had to say: JO: "Mon..................do you want the wine-fridge??? MON "Does the pope wear a funny hat?" Whoops, no sorry bout that! Those weren't the real comments........... OK , we'll try again........ To all my fellow friends, family and clients who have supported me in

Monika and family have been in Kerikeri for two years now! How time flies...........and flaps...... Anyhoo........ as it has been some time since Monika taught in Tauranga, she thought it would be a good idea to share her artistry with the good folk of Kerikeri. So many times you hear,....."I can't even draw stick figures." Well who wants to anyway??
There are no stick figures, no rigid instructions and no ONE way to create, in these classes. You will not be asked to laboriously draw bananas in a bowl and there will be no lesson plan. It will be a discovery of your creative 'bent' and a journey towards self-discovery and stretching your.............IMAGINATION!! Monika's classes might involve glue, spraypaint, tools and utensils, templates, paper, wood and anything else she can find. Oh and of course......paint! There is no pressure and lots of fun! It will make you smile and may be very healing for many. Come and play in Monika's playground! (She might even instigate wine appreciation at the same time!!) Contact Monika: monsart@ihug.co.nz ___________________________________________________________________________________________

OCTOBER- NOVEMBER 2008 Seasons Greetings to all! Due to SEVERE technical hiccups (and belches), this newsletter (and the 4th attempt at it) will be majorly condensed. AS well, ............Monika has pulled out all her hair because of it and is now attempting to chill with the other bald Xmas elves. So we leave you with the latest and most relevant arty news for both Monika and Joanna. Xmas drumroll please..........................
_____________________________________________________________________________________________ JOANNA has been squirreling away in her little gallery/studio, getting works ready for her solo exhibition in February at Warwick Henderson gallery. (She is now lily-white, mutters to herself and has grown a long beard .such is the life of an artistic hermit). Ahhhh but all joking aside, Joanna has worked extremely hard towards this latest solo exhibition. She has completed 6 out of the 7 works and has also pre-sold two of them!! They range between $3500 and $7000 and in the meantime, four of them have recently gone down to Hawkes Bay for a wee sojourn. The four were displayed as part of a book launch, 'The Pourerere Road' by Pam Ballantyne, in Omakere on December the 12th. This series is based on Joanna growing up on a sheep and beef farm in central Hawkes Bay and all the things her and her brothers used to get up to, ie: building tree huts, feeding the chickens (Beatrice had such a bad attitude ..wouldn't let them near the eggs), longdrops plotted around the place, catching the old Bedford bus to school (in Waipawa bus company colours), and spending weekends at Pourerere Beach. Joanna has endeavoured to continue with her ornate ideas, giving everyday NZ icons a fancy flare whilst still including her well-known houses, which symbolise the tree huts. HIBBYS LAST POST (A fond memory relating to Hibby the local postman who has since passed away)

Tis not happening and the newsletter tekky problems made her very, very grumpy. More like a Xmas troll than a Xmas elf. But enough about that..........She has discontinued the 'banging-her-head' on the brick wall, found a nice cool sav, a piece of brillig sunshine to bathe in , and put her dear little tootsies up!
She would like to direct you to her new works which can be found here: http://www.artdziner.co.nz/92268/info/galleryThumbs.html (She has been doing some work you know!) She popped herself on a plane and flew off to Melbourne for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time with ex-pat Kiwi friends, wining, dining and indulging in all the wonderful treats that Melbourne had to offer. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ On a very sad note, We are sad to say that Joanna lost her wee bundle of furry white joy last week. Charlie passed away on Tuesday the 9th of September. He was the cutest little ball of fluff you could ever hope to imagine and Jo got to love and adore him (and vice versa) for exactly one whole year. Many of you who have visited Jo in her gallery on Kerikeri road will have met Charlie. He was never far from Jo's feet and was very much a part of the art journey. He will be sadly missed by the many who grew to love him. So goodbye Charlie-bum. You were a wonderful wee doglet.............
