DECEMBER 2011

Hey there art buffs and buffettes. Yes its been a while since i last spoke (sounds like I’m in a confessional) but that WAS NOT because I didnt have anything to say....it was just that I was snowed under...by snow . Well not really......just art and art teaching and more commissions etc. In fact it’s been a fantastically bizzy year with lots of highs and MORE highs!

BUT ...here I am ...ready for a chat and to let you know whats been happening in the Monika Welch art world.

ART CLASSES

Lady's Art Class
I have been teaching between 9 and 12 hours a week. I have my ladies group on a Friday which I just LUFF. They are a bunch of cheeky chimps but they all have a wonderful time in the studio. We crank up the music, and boogie and paint. Somewhere in amongst  that, we share a pot luck lunch and buckets of caffeine are enthusiastically swilled. It’s a much needed, girly time-out for my ladies......and I get to play art tutor AND DJ.

Teen's Art Class

On Tuesdays I have my teen class which is an eye-opening but gratifying experience. It has been much fun to guide a gaggle of gifted girls and one brave male on the path of all things arty and farty. I have learnt much and I am not yet grey. (Mind you they are not my teens!)

What a cool bunch they are though and for the mostpart have proven terrific commitment to their art studies and exams at the end of this year. Guiding these young people to find not just an artistic flair or skill but grow in self-confidence and character is so very rewarding. They hail from 3 different schools and have achieved well this year. Two have finished year 13 and I am most proud to say , have made it into Whitecliffe art and fashion school for 2012. Another student has also finished high school and has gained  a placement at CINZ culinary institute for 2012. She will continue her art classes with me however. Another student leaving is off to boarding school next year. She recently sat her Cambridge art exams and I am sure she will achieve well in this.

I am considering the inclusion of a 'TWEENY' class next year for those aged 9-14.

The older students doing NCEA level 1, 2 and 3 as well as Cambridge students will be in a separate class.

(Fees are different too)

For all inquires, please email me to find out further info and fees.

Painting from home

I have been home for over a year now since having to move on from my gallery and have enjoyed it IMMENSELY. I have finally learnt to buckle down and just do the mahi! Unfortunately there are only a couple of galleries left in Kerikeri so places to put my work have been limited. However I have made an effort to place my own work and that of some of my students in and around venues in Kerikeri. There have been some great results for us all and I would like to thank, S’wich cafe, Wharepuke restaurant, Homestead Medical Clinic, and David Reed homes for hosting our artworks. If anyone else would like to host some art pieces in their place of business just let me know.

I have also been able to do quite a few commissions as well as embark on some portraits for a few private clients. These have challenged me greatly but I am learning learning LEARNING all the time.....and loving it!

Portrait Commissions ......please click  here

HOT GINGER GALLERY

Some of you have asked many times about my new gallery opening up at Palmco. I haven’t been able to say much as there have been more than a few delays this year which were unavoidable. But I have just heard that building will resume straight after Xmas and I should have the HOTGINGER Gallery and Art school ready for action by Feb 2012. With any luck we might even be able to open in conjunction with the new school year. How exciting is that??

So Palmco you ask? Where...what is that?

My hubby John is the sales manager for Palmco and the bottom line is, he knows lots and lots of guff about palm trees and therefore he sells them too. He is also a very amiable character and rather cute too I might add!

There is an incredibly beautiful ‘garden of national significance’ to walk through and you can get a nice cup of coffee and meander through the garden nursery as well. They have landscapers to help you design your business or property....or even design a ‘natural’ swimming pool.

Last year an onsite events centre was built. It is a stunning complex used for weddings, funerals and any ‘special event’ occasions you might have coming up. The Palmco Garden lounge Cafe will open in April so that will be an exciting addition too. Anyway don’t just take my word for it......come and look for yourself!  Here’s the link http://www.palmco.co.nz

PS: The walks through the garden are FREE!

Here is a pik of the gallery under construction

On a personal note..............

In February this year my Nikki Rose married the love of her life......Mike Janes. Its was a beautiful day and fantastic wedding and I have to give huge kudos and  credit to her marvellous Aunty Kaz who went beyond the call of duty to organise the wedding in Tauranga.  Nikki and Mike reside in Surfers Paradise and I recently went to visit and stay with them for 8 yummy days. And then I came home! (But I think I should go again....or to Melbourne.........soon?)

                  *******************************

MY first gallery was at a beautiful property here in Kerikeri called ‘Ngatipa’. It was owned by Rae McNally and he welcomed me on board to take charge of the little gallery cottage......and paint the days away!  Rae and I would share daily chats and coffee out the front and we got to know each other pretty well. We had so much in common! Well not really.......Rae was 87, I am 40-ish.....Rae LOVED to fly his two planes.......I am not a happy flyer, Rae was conservative and I am slightly ...NOT, and so it goes on. But we did have common ground in the size of our families. Rae raised 7 kids with an Anglican background and I was one of 7 in a rambunctious Catholic family! So after many discussions about family life I think that I can safely say, that the McNally kids were naughtier than the McLeod kids! Maybe......

Anyway, my dear friend Rae passed away on the 27th of November.....and I can honestly say that he was a great old guy, with many merry chuckles and a twinkle in his eye. I will miss him immensely. Cheerio Rae.....may you rest in peace.

For a week now I have been conducting a fund-raiser for a young NZ mum with breast cancer. Her name is Natalie Murphy and she is just sooooooo inspiring. I am selling one of my prints with 100% going to Natalie’s cause. The print is called “ANGEL WITH PINK RIBBONS” and is $16 plus $3 postage.

I have sold quite a few now and have just yesterday forwarded the first lot of funds to Natalie’s family. Tis quite an honour to be helping her in such a way......but as I say, I am truly inspired by HER and her story. Have a looky here to see for yourself. http://www.helpnat.com

If you would like to assist you can email me to order a print or ten! Thanks to the many who have alreayd ordered!

Well cheerio my fellow human beans. I hope you all have a thoroughly MERRY, MIRTHFUL and restful Christmas. Take it easy out there and if you ever feel any stress please make sure you have a quick jump in some water (water is soothing for the soul) and then just dance.....to something crazy! Stress will be gone in minutes. If that fails ......slug some whiskey. That should do it!

Love to you all and thanks to the many that keep me in arty business! You are amazing!

Feliz Navidad
